Located in the Kingston Metropolitan Area, UTech was formally accorded university status on 1 September 1995. The
institution began life in 1958 as the Jamaica Institute of Technology and was expanded into the College of Arts,
Science and Technology (CAST) before becoming an independent university during the mid-1990s.
1958: The original name of UTech was the Jamaica Institute of Technology; just over 50 students were enrolled and
only four programmes were offered.
1959: The name was changed to the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST)
1964: UTech’s incorporation into the CAST scheme was validated by an Act of Parliament
1986: CAST Scheme was revised to make UTech a degree-granting institution; the University was also empowered to
conduct affairs under two Statutory Bodies (i.e. Governing Council & Academic Board)
1995: UTech was formally accorded University status on September 1,1995
1999: UTech’s Student population rose to over 6,000
Over 100 programmes at Certificate, Diploma & Degree levels.
